A website to help new computer users

My name is Terry Wilhelm. I used to do enduser tech support for a major computer manufacturer. In doing this I observed that most people have problems using their computers for various reasons. I assisted these customers, as much as I could, with their problems. Now, let me set the record straight. I do NOT know all the answers, nor do I know anyone who does. I will attempt, to the best of my ability, to help anyone with basic computer questions. Be advised that if you bought a computer from a major computer manufacturer the first place you should go it to their website and see if the answer is there. I am going to put links to websites that have free help for basic computer users and also for help on using the Internet. I am also going to put links for buying hardware and software.

I supported Dos, Win 3.x, and Win 95. I use Win 98. I will try to answer questions about those. I did full computer tech support, but that was a couple of years ago. I am rusty, but I will try to help you. I have not supported Win 20000 or Win NT, nor will I try to answer questions about those.

God Bless America

Don't do this ! !

Tip #1: Most computer users get frustrated. OK, so what! I built my computer and I have problems with it. I have one right now. I'm frustrated, but I'm going to fix it. It's a memory problem and I don't like those at all.

Tip #2: Having been a "tech" let me tell you one thing - Don't let anybody tell you how dumb, stupid, etc. you are. I NEVER looked "down my nose" at anyone and I have problems with people who do. Those "techs" you are talking to started just like you, but have some kind of aptitude for doing tech support and I assure you that tech support is NOT an easy job.

Tip #3: Don't call tech support with a "chip on my shoulder" attitude. Tech support is hard enough without the enduser making it harder. How would you like to take calls where you have no idea what the problem is, have to figure out the problem from endless different explanations, and then fix it, via the phone, with someone you don't know, and don't really know their level of computer knowledge?
